The drawback of new year resolutions?\u00a0It is that year in,\u00a0year out, we make ourselves feel good by listing down ambitious goals,\u00a0albeit overly ambitious at times.<\/p>\n<p>After a month or two, our initial resolve and determination wears off and\u00a0we lose sight of our goals in lieu of so many other distractions. Too much work. No time to exercise and so on and so forth. Be realistic.<\/strong><br \/>\nOne ubiquitous reason why we\u00a0tend to set goals that do not materialise\u00a0is because these feel-good ambitions that are\u00a0not\u00a0tangible when you\u00a0actually contemplate them.<\/p>\n<p>At the point of writing, it feels good to ignore or overestimate yourself and say I\u2019m going to score all A\u2019s these year.<\/p>\n<p>While we should always have confidence in\u00a0accomplishing our goals and succeeding in life, our personal limitations should not be ignored. By listing down tangible, realistic and achievable goals, you can avoid losing sight of your aspirations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.\u00a0Be specific.<\/strong><br \/>\nPin-point accuracy is what we can strive for when setting resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>While it does not help to simply say \u2018I want to do better in Math this year\u201d or \u201cI want to lose weight\u201d, it <em>does<\/em> help if you know how much you would like to improve in Math or how much weight you want to lose. Also, it is essential to lay out the steps you need to take to attain these goals.<\/p>\n<p>The more specific you are with your resolutions, the better the idea of what you wish to achieve. Your goal feels more tangible and certainly something that you can definitely see yourself achieving.<\/p>\n<p>With realistic, specific and well-planned resolutions, the target\u00a0becomes more visible.<\/p>\n<p>The higher the clarity we\u00a0have on your goal, the easier it is for you to visualise it and attain it. Set a timeline.<\/strong><br \/>\nEverybody is guilty of procrastination. When it comes to resolutions like I\u2019m going to lose 10kg this year, great food is always around. The months go by and before you know it, it turns out losing 10kg was on your list five years back too.<\/p>\n<p>A workaround around this is to set a timeline or a deadline if necessary for each goal you have. This gives you a greater sense of urgency and you will be more motivated to act on your goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0Break down big goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Large goals might seem unattainable at first glance but by taking baby steps, the end point of every endeavour becomes clearer.<\/p>\n<p>Something like \u201cI want to get A\u2019s in all my subjects this year\u201d may seem like a big goal depending on where you are now. In line with the previous tip, It helps to break something like that down into \u201cI\u2019m going to get A\u2019s for half my subjects by mid-year and all A\u2019s by the end of year.\u201d It has been proven that small little goals have a higher chance of being achieved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Write down the whys.<br \/>\n<\/strong>Many underestimate this tip.<\/p>\n<p>The impetus for setting out on a particular resolution may have been felt towards the end of last year. You may have had strong reasons for wanting to push past that certain grade at that point in time.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is important to know and list down why you want to achieve that because when the going gets tough, this is really what will pull you through. It gets you to evaluate and reflect on how much you really want something. There are reasons that can be attributed to such changes in performance.<\/p>\n<p>A strategy is really the master plan of how you are going to set about achieving each and every goal. State down exactly how each resolution will be achieved. Devise a strategy on how you will go about striking each item of the list down.<\/p>\n<p>The clearer the path is, the higher the chances of you achieving it. And remember; failing to plan is planning to fail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Set termly reviews.<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is important to follow up on your master plan from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>Reflection here is key.
